Beyond a cottage deep in evergreen
Where widow Orchard mixes oil and salt
As the Ware stream flows beneath

A coin for harm, whispered incantations
The poppet doll in her grasp
Charms to render, a spell is laid
On the dark eve of Beltane Day

The maiden fair, strolls the sunlit knoll
Dreaming of a betrothal to be
Shielding her eyes, she lays to rest
In the shade of an Elder tree


Eyelids heavy beneath the glow
Drifting to the darkest dreams
Her rival’s desires become clear
